Guest Post: Precision in Writing

As writers, we write to be understood. To get our message across without any hitches. To express what we really mean in clear and un-vague terms. That's why we have to use precise words. And this is achieved by using accurate and expressive words.

When someone asks you, "How are you?" What's your normal reply?

You probably say, "I'm OK."

OK, well, most of us tend to give a reply along that line. But the thing is, with that kind of reply, do you think the person who asked you will have a clear idea of how you really are? I mean, if someone sincerely wanted to know how you are, she would expect a clear answer.

Let's face it, "OK" is a vague term. How OK are you exactly? OK as in really great? OK as in, "I'm getting by..."? OK as in "Gosh, I'm dying here!" Well, you get the picture.

People tend to be lazy to express exactly what they mean. Words like, "OK," "Nice," "Fine," "Not good," and such are "blanket words"...they cover a lot of territory but they really don't tell you anything.

As writers, we write to be understood. To get our message across without any hitches. To express what we really mean in clear and un-vague terms. That's why we have to use precise words. And this is achieved by using accurate and expressive words.

English is abundant with vivid words...use them. Don't settle for the vague ones. Make your writing more exact and vivid!

Here are some very easy exercises to help you get rid of vagueness:
A. Think of at least three vivid and specific verbs for each general verbs given.
1. run
2. walk
3. ask
4. reply
5. look
6. say
7. jump
8. cry
9. hate
10. eat

B. Using the specific verbs you came up with in A, write a short story, article, or news (fictional).

Interview Friday with Award-winning Author Hope Irvin Marston

Hope Irvin Marston is a member of the New York State Retired Teachers, the Greater Thousand Islands Literacy Council, the Jeff-Lewis Librarians Association, and the Adirondack Center for Writing, the St. Lawrence County Arts Council, the North Country Arts Council and SCBWI. She organized the Black River Valley Writers Club and served as its leader for several years.

In addition to writing thirty-two children’s books and several adult titles, Hope has been on staff for Christian Writers Conferences at Hephzibah Heights (MA), Montrose Bible Conference (PA) and at St. Davids Christian Writers Conference at Beaver Falls, PA. She has taught creative writing workshops at Jefferson Community College, the Jefferson-Lewis Teacher Center and the North Country Arts Council.

Her picture book series, MY LITTLE BOOK COLLECTION (Windward), has grown to eight titles thus far and has 125,000 books in print.

VS: I want to thank Hope for being my guest here on The Writing Mama today. To get things started, Hope, what do you do to help balance your writing life with your family life?

Hope: It’s not too difficult to balance my writing life with family life because my husband and I are retired senior citizens and our families live in New England and Pennsylvania. His activities are limited due to his health so he watches a lot of sports. That keeps him occupied most evenings and gives me time to spend at my computer.

VS: I can’t tell you how nice it is to have a time already carved out to write. Many of us reading your interview will be jealous. How long have you been writing?

Hope: My very first published piece was a poem, a tribute to my Sunday school teacher, published when I was in about sixth grade. My first stand-alone publication was a small devotional guide for children in the Daily Bread for Girls and Boys series, published by Child Evangelism Fellowship in 1972. Precious Moments characters were added to the cover in 1993 and the booklet stayed in print for many years. In 1978 Dodd, Mead published my first hardcover book, a career guide for junior high students interested in trucking careers.

VS: That’s wonderful. I know you’re a reader so what inspired you to write?

Hope: My fascination with books and the ones who wrote them and the stories my teacher read to us when I was in the middle grades. I still have fond remembrances of “Evangeline” and The Great Stone Face.”

VS: What is a typical writing day like for you?

Hope: Because I believe writers must write every day, I begin my writing day with Morning Pages, a habit I developed many years ago after reading a book by Julia Cameron. I used to keep these writings, but the stack of journals became so tall and took up so much room, I started disposing of them a few at a time in the weekly trash pickup. They had served their purpose in the original writing in that they primed the pump for whatever I was going to concentrate on later in the day.

VS: That’s wonderful. I love doing writing prompts to help get my blood flowing to write. It is hard to write everyday so I’m glad you found a way to do that. Hope, can you share with us what you write?

Hope: What do I write? It depends on what is on my mind. Sometimes it is two pages in which I try out ideas for a problem in some manuscript. Sometimes it is a rant about someone of something that upset me. Sometimes it is gloating over an unusual blessing or circumstance that came my way. My third page is a prayer journal of sorts. A page of pondering, asking, thanking, worshipping the Lord because I know my talent comes from Him. All of this serves to clear the writing pipes and make room for the “good” stuff to flow through later in the day.

Unlike most of my writing friends who feel freshest and want to get right to work on whatever manuscript is at the top of their work pile, I can’t settle down until I take care of major things on my daily “to do” list. If I don’t take care of them first, they keep distracting me until I give them the attention they are demanding. That means I spend my mornings doing my other things. Sometimes I don’t get to my writing until after the evening meal. But when I do settle down to write, I give it my full attention. My goal is to spend at least three hours a day writing.

VS: I hear many writers taking about how their families don’t understand the long hours that we put in on projects. Even though they love seeing the finished project and support our love, they also find it hard looking at the back of our heads so to speak. Is your family supportive of your writing?

Hope: My husband is my greatest supporter. It blesses my heart when I hear the pride in his voice as he shares something about my just released book, Eye on the Iditarod: Aisling’s Quest, with his friends. My sister Roberta took my new book as well as My Little Book picture book series with her to Florida to show the “snowbirds” down there.

VS: That’s wonderful. Nothing like free marketing for your books too. Can you share with us a little about your current books?

Hope: Eye on the Iditarod: Aisling’s Quest, my thirty-second children’s book, was released by Windward Books on December 1. It’s a biography of Aisling (pronounced “Ashley”) Lara Shepherd whose goal is to some day run her own dogs in the famous Iditarod sled dog race held each March in Alaska. Born legally blind, from the time she was three she loved watching sled dog racing on television. My book, written from information Aisling shared with me in hundreds of e-mail letters, follows her through the mushing season the year she is eleven. That memorable year she conquered obstacles, dealt with heartbreak and loss, and achieved great victories, while keeping her eye on the Iditarod.

In 2008 when Aisling was ten years old, she was one of three girls chosen from 8,000 nominees for a Real Girl of the Year Award, by American Girl. The award was given in recognition of her “demonstrating initiative, effort, impact and personal growth” in reaching her goal of someday running the Iditarod. She exemplified those qualities by her dedication to rescuing, training and racing sled dogs. I learned about her from an article in an online newspaper published near where we used to live in Maine.

Windward Books had been one of my publishers for many years. I am the author of an eight-book series of wildlife picture books called My Little Books. To date there are over 125, 000 copies of these books in print. The most recent one in the series is My Little Book of Bald Eagles. Because of the satisfying relationship I have with Al Krysan, the publisher, I asked if he’d consider publishing Aisling’s story. Gentleman that he is, he agreed to read the manuscript and was hooked.

Against the Tide: The Valor of Margaret Wilson, published by P&R Publishers, is an historical novel of the life of a young Covenanting Presbyterian in17^th century Scotland. Its target audience is 9-14 year-old readers. It deals with the persecution of devout believers who chose death over being forced to worship in their kirks where the immoral King Charles II claimed to be head.

VS: They sound wonderful and I can’t wait to finish reading them. I’ve enjoyed what I’ve read so far. Now Hope, what do you enjoy most about writing?

Hope: I love refining my manuscripts after I have a reasonable first draft. One of my joys is finding the precise word I need in a particular passage. That’s especially challenging when I am writing historical fiction, which I am doing right now. I have to find the right word for the context and then make sure that word was in use at the time. Two of my well-worn reference books are The Synonym Finder and English through the Ages.

VS: What is the most difficult part of writing?

Hope: The most difficult part of writing for me is choosing what to write about from a long list of things I find intriguing. What makes it challenging is determining which ideas have the most universal appeal to my chosen audience. When I began my publishing career nearly forty years ago, I couldn’t think of suitable topics. Now I can’t decide which of my ideas I should pursue.

I learned years ago when I was writing and submitting to magazines that just because something pushes my buttons, the whole world isn’t necessarily interested in that subject. I did a lot of “practice writing” until I became savvier in that regard. On the other hand, those pieces that were never published were good practice. Each one was a step forward in my pursuit of getting a book published.

VS: Thank you for sharing all that wonderful insight, Hope, and with that, what is the best writing advice you ever received?

Hope: That I should write what is important to me because it touches my heart rather than writing for what I think will sell. Also, I should write about that topic that has been inserting itself into my thinking for long periods of time. For example, I first read about Margaret Wilson about thirty years before I was able to gather the information (and enjoy two trips to Scotland) to write a sensible accounting of this devout teen-ager and her faith.

VS: Do you find it hard to balance your personal writing time with your other projects and/or jobs?

Hope: Not with my other jobs since I have been retired, but with my other interests and commitments. Things needing my attention tend to pile up in the same proportion as the paper stashes on my worktable. During the month of January, I was mentally stretched with making revisions on an historical novel about the War of 1812 that I was professionally critiqued by a respected children’s book editor. At the same time, I was answering the Interview Questions for this World of Ink Tour and having two interviews concerning the publication of Eye on the Iditarod. I didn’t spend much time twiddling my thumbs and I never watch television.

VS: Yes, it can be hard to find the balance sometimes. There are many things I also seeing piling up around me and I have to stop and say, “Okay, time to get this done before it gets out of hand.” Hope, do you have any other works in progress? Can you share a little about them?

Hope: Yes. My current project is an historical middle grade novel, Sackets Harbor Powder Monkey. It’s local history. I had hoped to find a publisher for it a couple of years ago. After over 20 rejections, I realized it must have major faults. I learned to find them after attending Darcy Pattison’s Novel Revision Workshop in the fall of 2010. Since then I’ve spent considerable time re-writing the story. I had it professionally critiqued by Paula Morrow (good decision on my part) and am now working through her comments and suggestions. Because it’s too late to find a mainstream publisher in time for the War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebration, I am bringing this one out as an e-book.

Once the powder monkey book is completed, I will get back to another historical novel of a Vermont family settling in New York in the early 1800s. Hannah Brown: Pioneer Girl is the working title. The story is based on the settlement of Pulaski, New York. During a difficult winter move from Vermont to central New York in 1806, a plucky 12-year-old Hannah proves her maturity in hopes of being given the new calf that will be born shortly after the family arrives at their destination.

VS: Hope, I would love for you to share with us what you think are the basic ingredients of a good book?

Hope: Intriguing, unique characters, doing something non-routine that is fun, dangerous, important, or helpful to others that are believable. It must be written in such a way the reader can visualize every scene and action so much he feels he is right there watching it happen.

VS: Is there anything else you would like to share with us about being a “Writing Mama”?

Hope: Though my husband and I have not been blessed with children, I come from a family of nine and have lots of extended family. It’s rewarding when they express interest in my writing and when they share their writing with me.

It’s a natural high when I do school presentations or book signings and a child comes to me and confides that he has his own copy of one of my books and tells me “it’s the best book I’ve ever read!”

The inspiration behind writing Believe and info on the other Mind Over Matter (M.O.M) Books by Kasey Crawford Kellem

RESILIENCY: Since I began in education over 20 years ago, I had been intrigued by how children and adults rebounded in life. I studied the characteristics of resiliency in Graduate School and Post Grad School. Determined to somehow teach children how to be resilient, I later came up with the book idea. Book writing had not only been something I wanted to do since I was a child, but also something my mother encouraged me to do! It made perfect sense to combine my mission with my childhood dream!

I was on a mission to help children become resilient. In order to be resilient, I knew children needed to BELIEVE in their possibilities, RELAX often, LAUGH at playful experiences, DREAM about inspiring futures, and LOVE those they encounter. And so the book series began: Believe; Love; Laugh; Relax; and Dream. After further thought, the company, Mind Over Matter (M.O.M.) Books, was born. The series’ title not only describes the purpose of the books, but also brings my late mother into the project!

Believe was the first of my five M.O.M books to be published. It made perfect sense as Believe is my family’s mantra. It is everywhere throughout our house: bookshelves, windowsills, walls, candles, blankets, plates, pictures, ornaments and unique decorations. It is in our family room, garage, living room, kitchen, dining room, and every bedroom...you get the idea. We Believe!

But we don't stop! Also, throughout our home we have wooden decorations that say, "Relax," "Laugh," and "Dream." (Truly a home of a counselor, ey?) I felt children should also be reminded of these resiliency skills, yet in a more whimsical way. Therefore, the books were designed in a way that allows them to free stand and serve as a decoration and constant resiliency reminder.

Given enough book sales, the additional Mind Over Matter Books should be out within the next two years. I Believe!

Kasey Crawford Kellem, a School Counselor and former Special Education Teacher, has devoted her life to helping children facing adversity be resilient. Kasey created Mind Over Matter (M.O.M.) books to teach children skills to overcome life’s challenges. She has earned a Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree in Special Education and an Educational Specialist Degree in Counseling. She is a devoted wife, stepmother, sister, daughter, friend and counselor.

As writer's we often struggle with our opening lines. Thie story might be fantastic, but if we don't get the reader hooked in the beginning they'll never get to our wonderful story.

You want a reader to get that unmistakable "WOW!" feeling at the start. Something ticks in their brain that tells them they absolutely MUST read your story, be it picture book or novel!

Interview Friday with Molly Nero, Author of Smarty Pig

Molly Nero loves to sing, dance and read. She spent over 18 years teaching elementary school. Reading to her own children, she was inspired to write. The second book in the Smarty Pig book series Smarty Pig and the Test Taking Terror releases in Spring 2012.

VS: I want to thank you for being my guest here on The Writing Mama today, Molly. To get things started, what do you do to help balance your writing life with your family life?

Molly: My family has to come first. My daughter is a sophomore in high school, so the realization that she will be off to college in a couple of years is looming overhead now. I try to write during the day since I am not working at this time, so when the kids come home from school, I’m available to them. My husband is retired and helps keep things going around the house, so it’s a blessing to not have work because I finished not only Smarty Pig, but the 2^nd in the series and have begun writing the 3^rd one also. It’s not uncommon to find me writing at all hours of the night either. I’m a person who will get up at 4am just to work in the peace and quiet.

VS: How long have you been writing?

Molly: I began Smarty Pig seven years ago. One night after I read to my son, the idea for Smarty Pig began in my thought. I went to the computer and just began to write while the rest of my family continued their Christmas preparations and songs from “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” blaring on the tv filled my ears. That truly was the beginning.

VS: What inspired you to write?

Molly: I have been inspired by many authors over the years. The ability to engage a child’s imagination, to captivate an audience of 4^th grade boys and girls, or to develop a web of interrelated characters that all connect some way at the end of the story were all things that inspired me when reading to my children, my students or just myself.

VS: What is a typical writing day like for you?

Molly: I’m up at 5:30am to start the day watching the Pink Panther with my daughter and 2 dogs snuggled up in 1 chair. COFFEE! Get both my kids off to school. Check on my mother who has her own house downstairs. Get on my treadmill to clear my thoughts listening to KLOVE radio. Then my husband and I discuss what the day will bring, and I’m on my computer writing. Some days I will work on only one story. Other days my mind jumps to ideas for other books. I’ve learned to just roll with it. The one thing I must have is a window to look out of while I’m writing. The endlessness of the sky reminds me that ideas are just as endless.

VS: Is your family supportive of your writing?

Molly: My family is thrilled with my writing! My husband is my biggest fan and promotes the book everywhere he goes to anyone he can. He truly believes in the message that Smarty Pig brings to children and parents. My kids are actually helping me write the next book about bullying. Even my nine year old son starts to work out rhymes that I can incorporate into the book. It’s wonderful that they believe in me, especially since this is really a reinvention of my career.

VS: Can you share with us a little about your current book(s)?

Molly: The Smarty Pig series deals with issues and situations our youngest learners are dealing with. Smarty Pig is about a family of pigs that have given up on school. They don’t do their homework and feel it’s not important. The only one who does is teased and nic-named Smarty Pig. When Smarty Pig gets good grades and the others fail, they reach out to her to help them. She takes skills taught at school and puts them into real-life situations, for example, the kitchen becomes a grocery store with things to be purchased using play money. As the games are played, their grades improve too. They begin to understand that learning CAN be fun, and it’s not just for school, learning is for life.

Smarty Pig and the Test Taking Terror deals with the fear of tests that affects many students. Petey Pig shuts down when he is asked to take a test, so Smarty Pig models different strategies to help him calm down and feel more confident. This is another issue many kids struggle with especially with all the state testing that goes on now in our schools.

VS: What do you enjoy most about writing?

Molly: Developing the plot of the story is my favorite part of writing at this time. I know what I want to get across to my audience of children, but I want them to relate to my character and message. You start with an idea that takes you in many different directions while you make choices along the way to help it grow. You’re never exactly sure how it will turn out, but the process is delightful. In the end, I want my readers to enjoy the book, yet learn its message at the same time.

VS: What is the most difficult part of writing?

Molly: The difficulty with Smarty Pig is it’s all in rhyme which can be challenging. I don’t want to sacrifice my message or give up a figure of speech or something that I know kids will relate to for the rhyme. It becomes like a dance where the ideas and words must work together to create a story that the kids can read, understand, and enjoy.

VS: Do you have any other works in progress? Can you share a little about them?

Molly: Stories are abundant and in many different stages in my notebooks, laptop, and thoughts. I really wished for more books for little boys when my son was small to help with social skills, so I am working on a series specifically for that age. My daughter is developing the illustrations, so it will be a family production! Another story I’m currently finishing is My Come and Go Sisters which depicts the life my daughter has lived with 3 step-sisters, and all the laughter and frustrations that goes with a family whose members don’t all live together all the time.

VS: What tips can you give writing parents with children at home to help them see publication?

Molly: “To be patient and keep writing” would be my advice. I wrote whenever I could while I taught full-time with 2 young children going with me to the elementary school every day. Many lunch periods were spent talking into a digital recorder as I walked the gym track outside giving myself a chance to focus on the stories as they developed in my thought. I’m sure many school parents would drive by and think that I had lost my mind talking to myself, but that simply was the only chance I had. My stories have been tucked away in different places for many years. I was finally able to complete Smarty Pig and pursue its publication, but that brought rejection letters and disappointment. It’s tough, but if you believe in your work, and it’s the best you know you can do, don’t give up. I found a publisher that believed in my message, and it’s been an amazing ride.

VS: What is required for a character to be believable? How do you create yours?

Molly: My characters must come to life for young kids. To have validity with my audience, I use details taken from my own experience as a music teacher of grades Kindergarten through 5^th. Attitudes and situations that kids understand or experience themselves help create depth in the character. Smarty Pig‘s family has given up on school. They simply don’t care and show that by not doing their homework. How many kids give up on homework sometime? How many kids wish they could just not do it at all like the pigs do? This is relatable for young students and helps my characters come to life.

VS: Is there anything else you would like to share with us about being a “Writing Mama”?

Molly: Being a “writer” gives you an amazing connection with your own kids. You are doing something that is also a big part of their life in school. What a great role model for your kids! Working with language is a gift that many don’t understand or use, so when you are writing, you’re teaching your own kids that it’s important to choose words carefully and to move beyond the overused, tired words everyone uses. Share your writing and ideas with them and you’ll be surprised at the support and sometimes even great criticism or suggestions that they might have for you. It could spark a desire in them to become writers as well!

What It Is Like Being a Teen Author with Rachel Yurchisin

When I first got the notification that my manuscript was accepted by Halo Publishing, I was overjoyed. It was an amazing feeling when I got the first shipment of books and seeing my name on the cover and my picture on the back. It was really a dream come true. This whole experience has not changed my relationship with any of my friends- many of whom have bought my books for the holidays.

I have found it very difficult to balance writing, the process of publishing, and publicizing the book, with my schoolwork and hobbies. I give Virginia a lot of credit with putting up with me not keeping up with deadlines etc. However, I believe that family comes first, and then school work, and then anything else.

On the side I participate in the Zoo Crew at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, which is a group that teaches the public about the animals on exhibit. I also am in involved with the Future Scientists groups at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History that does surveys of wildlife on various museum properties throughout the course of the year.

In addition, since 6^th grade, I have been participating in science fairs on the state level and last year I represented the state of Ohio in a national science fair. For school, I am on the varsity tennis team and hopefully on the varsity softball team in the spring. As you can imagine, it’s hard to have a social life when you’re involved with all of these extracurricular activities- thank goodness I have very understanding friends and family who support me through all of my endeavors.

Even some of my teachers have expressed interest in my book. Also, now since I am a junior in high school- the college search is currently taking place. When I visit various colleges, many are impressed with the fact that I am a published author and I hope that that will assist in my college acceptance probability.

If you haven’t written anything yet but you want to become an author, I would suggest starting to write about anything that you find interesting. For me in particular- I have always found inspiration in nature and past experiences. If you get a spell of “writer’s block” make sure you relax- in most cases there isn’t a deadline and if you relax more than likely you will be able to think of something. If you already have something written that, you feel has potential for becoming a published work- send it in as soon as you can! The worst thing that they can do is say no and suggest a few changes. It may make take a few tries but it is definitely worth it once you get the satisfaction of seeing your name on the cover of a book that YOU wrote.

Molly Nero is the author of Smarty Pig, a children´s book geared toward ages Kindergarten through 3rd grade. As the youngest of seven kids growing up in Texas, Nero kept busy protecting her dolls from five brothers by curling up in her closet with a good book from the library. Nero said, "This was always a wonderful way to escape the onslaught of G. I. Joe and his army."

Nero also has a love for music and dancing, so during college, musical theater was a huge part of her life. Realizing it wasn´t a strong career field, she went to her second love, children and teaching. Nero spent 17 years teaching elementary school in Texas. After 5 years in the 4th grade classroom, she became the music teacher giving her the opportunity to work with kids from Kindergarten to 5th grade. Nero shared, "Because music is not the same as academics, I was able to teach kids in a different way. To pass out papers, I would fling them across the room to a chorus of squeals, as my students would scramble to get one that was still falling down. I loved creating grade level musicals to help my students understand the amazing experience of performing in front of an audience."

While teaching the 4th grade, Nero´s love of writing was awakened and she was encouraged and nurtured by her students in their writing. Nero said, "My own abilities were strengthened. Being critiqued by 10-year-olds was very humbling but allowed me to open up myself and make sure I was relating to them as my audience." It was during those years Nero began to look at books differently. She realized she wanted to develop her own ideas and spent her lunchtime walking around the gym track outside with a digital recorder verbalizing her stories. Nero shared, "I´m sure many parents driving by thought I was crazy, but it was the only time I had. I was once told to write about what you know. Well, teaching and children of elementary age has been my life, so it makes sense. I was never your ´typical´ music teacher."

Maryann B. Sawka lives in a small town named Hiller in south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her husband of nearly 10 years and two daughters. She studied Early Childhood/Elementary Education and earned a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood/Elementary Education from the California University of PA in 1993 and a Master’s of Science in Reading and Literacy for Elementary Grades from Walden University. Sawka’s career path includes working as an alumni director, technical writer, software trainer and special needs preschool teacher.
Sawka has always had an appreciation for the written word and has been an avid reader since she was a child. Along with the love for reading has been a love for writing. As a technical writer, Sawka documented software programs for end users, which was very process-oriented. When she started her own company, Charming Manners, Sawka began writing the curriculum after much research in the area of manners and etiquette.
Her current book Good Table Manners Made Easy was born from her etiquette workshops and curriculum, a collection of tips for diners of all ages. Sawka stated, “While still somewhat process-oriented, the writing of my book allowed for some creativity mixed in with the processes.”
The etiquette workshops Sawka presents have primarily focused on children, which did indeed lead her to write for children. Good Table Manners Made Easy has wonderful information for diners of all ages though, and the illustrations and easy-to-understand cadence captures children.
Sawka stated, “Writing a book is hard work! There are many drafts, revisions, new ideas, thoughts of ‘I wish I had included this or omitted that’ that go with the process. Writing for children is different because you have to put yourself in the mind of a child. You don’t want the book to be too long so it loses their attention, but at the same time there is a point that needs to be expressed. Finding the balance between the right information and too much information is challenging.”

VS: I want to thank you for being my guest here on The Writing Mama today, Rachel. As a teen author, what do you do to help balance your writing life with your family life?

Rachel: I have my family help me with my writing process. They have always supported me in anything that I do, they were the ones that were telling me to write more instead of spend time with them!

VS: When did you start and how long have you been writing?

Rachel: I wrote “Diary of My Days in Kenya” when I was in fifth grade, but I still continue to write poetry and reflections in my spare time for fun and for school.

VS: What inspired you to write?

Rachel: In fifth grade, it was part of the curriculum in English class to write a children’s book. I choose the topic of a naturalist who documented the actions of a lioness who adopted baby oryx; the inspiration came from a newspaper article that highlights the natural world on a weekly basis.

VS: What is a typical writing day like for you?

Rachel: I write whenever I feel like it really. I just write for the sake of writing- when I’m in “the groove” of writing I get on a roll and that’s when my greatest writing shows.

VS: You mentioned how your family helped with the writing process of your book. How has your family been supportive of your writing?

Rachel: My mother was my editor and sounding board for my ideas. My father helped me with phrasing and getting a new perspective. My grandfather is the man who did all of the illustrations and not only put color in my book but also in my life. My entire family is extremely supportive of my experiences with the writing and publishing of “A Diary of My Days in Kenya.”

VS: What was the first thing you ever had published?

Rachel: “Diary of My Days in Kenya” is my first book publication. I had multiple poems and short stories published in anthologies and contests throughout Ohio and some national poetry publications.

VS: Can you share with us a little about your current book “Diary of My Days in Kenya”?

Rachel: My current book is entitled “Diary of My Days in Kenya.” It is a fictional story loosely based upon the real life occurrences of a nomadic lioness who nurtures baby oryx as if they were her own young. During a drought, a naturalist, Susan Polling, and other professionals, are sent on assignment to observe and document this special pairing. The book’s spirited protagonist, Polling, offers the reader interesting insights as to why this unique phenomenon has transpired. The story explores how the traditional relationship of predator and prey is transcended, presenting a spellbinding account of how a parental bond, even a non-traditional one, can never be broken.

VS: What do you enjoy most about writing?

Rachel: I love being able to express myself in the written word. Not many people my age write poetry let alone a book. I feel very special being able to add that to my resume; a facet of my personality that makes me different from the crowd.

VS: What is the most difficult part of writing?

Rachel: Whether it’s for a book, a poem, or even an essay for school, I have always had a problem with ending a thought. I can keep on writing about a subject forever and my sentences progressively get more “wordy.” That’s when I know I need to just stop and “get to the point” of what I am trying to say.

VS: What do you think are the basic ingredients of a good book?

Rachel: There always must be a balance; a ying and yang aspect for the characters and the life they lead. When there is a certain character or situation that tugs at the reader’s heart - it makes the book more purposeful and rewarding. When an author has a strong command of language and a diverse vocabulary, it allows the book to rise to a different dimension.

VS: Thank you, Rachel for sharing your thoughts on writing and about your book, “Diary of My Days in Keya”. We all wish you much success and are inspired by you.

Thank you for joining us today, Rachel. Can you please start us off by sharing a bit about yourself?
I have a love of science and nature that has inspired me to write my first children’s book in the hopes of passing on my passion to other young “budding” naturalists. I am currently a junior in high school residing in Cleveland, Ohio. I feed my interest in animals and the natural world by participating in educational programs at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. I enjoy competing in tennis tournaments and I play softball for my high school.

When did you first get bit by the writing bug?
I started writing little poems from a very early age, but I didn’t write my first book Diary of My Days in Kenya until fifth grade. Why did you decide to write stories for the How-to/Parenting market? It wasn’t a conscience decision; at that point in my life, I was writing a story that was designed for children my age. I do believe that if I am fortunate enough to publish any future writings, I will probably continue writing children’s stories.

What is your favorite part of writing for this group? What is the greatest challenge?
My favorite part is knowing that I am opening up the world of reading to a child and sending them off on an adventure that they may never had embarked upon had they not turned the pages of my book. The greatest challenge is to “get all my facts straight” and do the research aspect of the writing.

Maryann: Balancing family life, my children’s activities, writing and everything else is challenging. I find myself doing a lot of writing/planning in my head, phrasing passages, envisioning layouts and visualizing illustrations. It may take a few weeks or months for me to get everything planned out in my head before I begin the actual writing. But, I find that I am more organized and work better that way.

VS: I do a lot of my planning in my head too. I find if I write things down too early, I forget them or I’m not organized enough to begin writing. With that thought, how long have you been writing?

Maryann: I have always had an appreciation for the written word and have been an avid reader since I was a child. Along with the love for reading has been a love for writing.

VS: That’s wonderful. What inspired you to write and become a published author?

Maryann: As a technical writer, I documented software programs for end users, which was very process-oriented. When I started my own company, Charming Manners, I began writing my own curriculum after much research in the area of manners and etiquette. My book was born from my etiquette workshops and curriculum into a collection of tips for diners of all ages. While still somewhat process-oriented, the writing of my book allowed for some creativity mixed in with the processes.

VS: A wonderful book, too. Is your family supportive of your writing?

Maryann: My family is very supportive of my efforts. My daughter’s help with household chores and my husband takes over the kitchen when I’m really involved in something. My mom helps with driving our daughters to their activities if I have something scheduled. Having a supportive family helps!

VS: Yes, it really does. What was the first thing you ever had published?

Maryann: When I was a teenager, I had a poem published. We always vacationed at Bethany Beach, Delaware, and I wrote a poem about the beach. It was published in our newspaper (at the time), the Brownsville Telegraph.

VS: Can you share with us a little about your current book Good Table Manners Made Easy?

Maryann: Good Table Manners Made Easy is a collection of tips and tricks for using good table manners during a formal or informal meal. The book grew out of the many etiquette workshops that I have presented to children in the area of table manners. I found that the parents who enrolled their children liked being involved in the workshop through the materials that I sent home after each session. The book grew from the “tip cards” that I used to send home.

Good Table Manners Made Easy talks about meal-time hygiene, appropriate conversation topics versus inappropriate conversation topics, the mechanics of using your silverware and napkins. It also includes ideas about “eating with style” so that everyone can enjoy the meal. Good manners includes making others feel comfortable, something that the book focuses on, along with encouraging self-confidence for a successful interaction.

VS: Authors can always share what they love about writing, but hat is the most difficult part of writing for you?

Maryann: Writing a book is hard work! There are many drafts, revisions, new ideas, thoughts of ‘I wish I had included this or omitted that’ that go with the process. Writing for children is different because you have to put yourself in the mind of a child. You don’t want the book to be too long so that it loses their attention, but at the same time there is a point that needs to be expressed. Finding the balance between the right information and too much information is challenging.

VS: I will have to agree that writing a book, especially a children’s book is hard work. Do you have any other works in progress? Can you share a little about them?

Maryann: Now that Good Table Manners Made Easy is in publication, I am working on another book in the series that relates to using good manners when entertaining others. This book tackles the appropriate manners and behaviors when you are hosting at your home or by inviting someone to share an excursion with you or when you are the guest. “Learning how to behave appropriately in a variety of social situations helps you to secure a repeat invitation, as well as leaving a positive impression of you with others,” a passage from the book that I am writing at present.

In many instances, we, as adults, think that children will know how to behave appropriately if we just put them together and let them figure it out on their own. I think that the rise in our national bullying epidemic would indicate a need exists for us to teach our children, teens and others how to get along, and consider the feelings of others in order to restore a feeling of civility to our society.

VS: Sounds like another great book. What tips can you give writing parents with children at home to help them see publication?

Maryann: I think it’s important to keep everything in perspective. For me, writing is part of my business, so I tend to plan portions of my workday for writing. But, inspiration is fickle. It can really strike at anytime. I find myself jotting down notes on a napkin in the car while sitting at a traffic light. Most of my actual words-on-paper writing happens when my family is otherwise occupied. Sometimes, my youngest daughter will be playing dolls in my office while I am writing. I keep paper near my bed so that if I have an idea as I am falling asleep, I can jot it down and not lose it. The best advice I can probably give is that you have to be flexible. My family needs me and depends on me for certain things. I have to balance their needs with what I am trying to accomplish. Finding a supportive publisher is key! Lisa Umina with Halo Publishing has become a friend, not just my publisher. She is so supportive and nurturing of her authors and helps you to realize your dreams. Finding a support system in the industry will help you to reach your goals.

VS: Yes, all of that is very important. What do you think are the basic ingredients of a good book?

Maryann: I tend to picture myself reading the book to a group of children, which allows me to better determine whether I will hit my target audience with something that they will enjoy. I picture illustrations that can compliment the passages for a cohesive flow of information. Keeping the book at the right length is important as a child’s attention span is typically short. You have to capture their interest and keep with something entertaining.
